Choosing Your Wood Species
The species you choose shapes everything — color, grain pattern, character, and how your table feels underfoot when you walk past it every morning. All seven of our species are available on any table top, in any of our six stain options. Here's what sets each one apart.
Red Oak
Color: Warm pinkish-brown tones with a golden undertone
Grain: Open, pronounced grain with strong ray fleck patterns
Hardness: Janka 1290 — highly durable, handles daily family use with ease
Character: Classic American hardwood. Familiar, timeless, and approachable. Takes stain beautifully across the full range — from Natural to Jacobean.
Best for: Families who want a proven, durable hardwood with traditional warmth. Our most popular species.
White Oak
Color: Cool tan to light grey-brown, often with a subtle silver tone
Grain: Tighter than Red Oak, with distinctive ray fleck that shows best in Natural and Provincial stains
Hardness: Janka 1360 — slightly harder than Red Oak, excellent scratch resistance
Character: Sophisticated and modern. White Oak has become the defining wood of contemporary interior design — and for good reason. It pairs beautifully with both warm and cool tones.
Best for: Modern farmhouse, Scandinavian, and transitional interiors. Anyone who loves the look of high-end furniture showrooms.
Walnut
Color: Deep chocolate brown with rich purple and grey undertones
Grain: Flowing, straight to slightly wavy grain with a fine, even texture
Hardness: Janka 1010 — softer than oak but still highly functional for dining use
Character: The pinnacle of hardwood elegance. Walnut develops a warm patina over time, growing more beautiful with every year of use. No stain required — though our Natural finish lets it speak for itself.
Best for: Those who want a statement piece. Pairs exceptionally well with our dark-base styles and our Blackwood design.
Ash
Color: Light blonde to creamy white, with warm undertones
Grain: Bold, pronounced grain similar to Oak but with a lighter, airier feel
Hardness: Janka 1320 — one of the hardest species we offer
Character: Clean and bright. Ash brings lightness to a room without sacrificing the visual interest of a strong grain pattern. Stunning under Natural and Provincial stains.
Best for: Light-filled spaces, Scandinavian-inspired interiors, or anyone who loves the look of a bright, airy table with real character grain.
Soft Maple
Color: Pale creamy white to light tan
Grain: Smooth, fine, and relatively subtle — lets the stain do the talking
Hardness: Janka 950 — lighter than the oaks, best suited for lower-traffic settings
Character: The most painterly canvas of all our species. Because Soft Maple's grain is subtle, stain colors come through vivid and consistent. Dark Walnut and Jacobean in particular look exceptional on Maple.
Best for: Customers who have a specific stain color in mind and want it rendered as cleanly as possible.
Wormy Maple
Color: Light tan base with dark mineral streaks and natural worm-track marks
Grain: Smooth Maple grain interrupted by distinctive character marks unique to each board
Hardness: Janka 950 range
Character: No two Wormy Maple tables will ever look identical. The mineral streaks and worm tracks are natural features preserved from the tree's life — they are not defects. They are the story. If you want a table that is genuinely one of a kind, this is it.
Best for: Collectors, design enthusiasts, and anyone who values organic character over uniformity. Especially striking under Natural and Provincial finishes.
Eastern Pine
Color: Warm honey to amber tones, deepening with age
Grain: Wide growth rings, prominent knots, and swirling figure
Hardness: Janka ~870 — the softest species we offer; will develop dents and dings over time
Character: Pine is not trying to be perfect — and that's exactly the point. It carries the warmth and familiarity of a farmhouse kitchen, a cabin in the mountains, a table that feels like it's been in the family for generations. Patina is part of the design.
Best for: Rustic, farmhouse, and cabin-style homes. Those who love the idea of a table that looks more beautiful as it ages and picks up the marks of family life.
